Meet our Instructors

Karen A. Anderson, owner/instructor

A native Marylander, Karen Anderson is the owner/operator of Southern Grace Farm.  Karen has over thirty years experience riding, working and breeding various breeds of horses.  Karen studied equine science at Dickinson State University, North Dakota and is a Master Certified Trainer (MCT) with over 25 years experience working with and teaching children of all ages to enjoy the world of equine. Karen specializes in the Western discipline and is proficient on trails and western pleasure. Karen is the National Director and founder of  Maryland High School Rodeo, Inc. Karen has previously served on the board for the Southern Maryland Horse Council and Southern Maryland Trail Riders. She is an active member of the AQHA, APHA and the League of Maryland Horseman. Karen is also an active 4-H MCE volunteer and is a certified tester for the state of Maryland for levels 1 and 2 riding and knowledge abilities.

Shelby R. Anderson, instructor

Shelby is a graduate of La Plata High School and is currently studying for her Chiropractic Assistant Certification. Additionally, Shelby has a dual enrollment at Dickinson State University where she is studying Equine Science. Shelby has over 18 years riding experience and has been teaching riding lessons at SGF for the past 8 years. Shelby holds several awards for competitions and local area events. The younger students really enjoy Shelby as their instructor and it is truly amazing to watch the young students as they progress in their riding abilities.  Shelby is also a favoriate of our adult riders. Shelby has a talent at putting the most aprenhensive rider at ease.

Georgeanne Aist, instructor

Georgeanne is a Certified (CHA) Master Instructor for both English and Western disciplines. Georgeanne is skilled in training both horse and rider in dressage, hunter jumper, eventing and western pleasure. She is experienced in teaching the most timid to the advanced rider. Georgeanne worked alongside of Jim Koford (World Cup Finalist) and Joe Fargis (Gold medalist). She has sent students on to Gold Medalist and World Champion Eventer, Bruce Davidson. Georgeanne held the Head Instructor position for several Maryland equestrian centers. She is a 4th level dressage rider and competes at 4'9" jump courses. Additionally, Georgeanne is sought after for conducting clinics and often is requested for judging shows.


Jennifer McCormick, instructor

Jennifer comes to Southern Grace Farm from the West Coast, specifically, Catalina Island, California. Jennifer is a former member of the United States Pony Club (USPC) Catalina Island, CA. Jennifer received her equine training studying under Joannie Propst and later from Diane Hunter also from the USPC, Catalina Island, CA. Jennifer is a former member of the Country Spice Drill Team where she performed for many events throughout the West Coast riding for Hunnycut and Sons Rodeo Company. Jennifer was a participant of the 1995 Rose Parade in Pasadena, CA and was a participant of the Brass Ring in Pamona, CA, riding for Patti Fox stables. Jennifer is the 1989 Junior Miss Stagecoach Days Rodeo Queen and Senior Rodeo Queen in 1990. Offering over 35 years of experience, our advanced riders will appreciate the knowledge and skill set Jennifer McCormick brings to Southern Grace Farm.



Erica Durham, instructor

Erica is our Barrel Racing and Pole Bending Pro. Born into a horse riding family Erica has competed numerous times in many competitions including the National and World Championships in Jackson, MS, Perry GA and Lexington, VA.  Erica was a member of the International Barrel Racing Association (IBRA) and qualified for the National Championship in Tennessee. Erica competes yearly traveling the East Coast and attending the National Barrel Horse Association shows. Erica specializes in training horses as well as the rider, from beginners to exerienced riders.  Some of Erica's Equestrian Honors include 2013 Reserve 4D Open finals National Champion Lexington, VA, Top 5 4D VA State Finals NBHA World Qualifier, 2012 4D, Youth championship at the Southern Rebel Futurity in Augusta, SC, NBHA Youth and World Champion Qualifier, 2008 MD-DE Open 3D District Champion NBHA, 2007 NBHA MD State Reserve Champion Youth 3D IBRA MD 1D Pole Bending Champion.

Jennings Anderson (JR), instructor

JR has over 20 years riding experience. JR's family has been involved in horse pulling competitions for over 60 years. JR's love of equine has prompted him to  develop his skills in harnessing and driving pony carts. JR is a natural teacher and the students excell in his classes.
